One of the joyous moment in my role as a mother is when it comes to breastfeed Asha.
I like the moment not just because breastfeeding escalating the production of serotonin also known as ‘happy hormone’, but also because I can observe Asha very closely.
Okay, I admit, I’m in love with her. Deeply in love. More, I adore her. So, though it’s pretty tough in taking care of Asha alone – because Ardian works approximately 10 hours/day, 22 days/month – , it always be a wonderfull time.
By breastfeeding Asha, I can hold her close to me and she would hold me back. I like the sense of her holding onto me. Being so close I can hear her breathing, I can hear the cipping sound of her mouth while breastfeed, and what I like most is that I can smell her scent which Ardian and I thought very unique. We call it “bau lucu Asha” .
Its a mixed scent derive from baby’s soap and shampoo, telon oil, bedtime baby powder, baby cologne and of course, Asha’s own unique aroma. It meangled in a way that present what I thought as the most calming and and relaxing scent ever. Maybe that explain why I often fell asleep while breastfeeding.
Of course, we’ve seen on tv, read or hear from various sources that breastfeed is essential for the baby’ physical and mental development because breastmilk contains nutritions no formula milk can compare that needed for the baby’s development. But more than that, breastfeeding is alo essential for the mother. Because, breastfeeding can be an experience very like an aromatherapy session. By breastfeeding, hopefully new-mums can relax after a tiring day adapting into a brand new routine as a mum, and new-mums can regain their strength needed for the healing process after laboring.
Extremely important, breastfeeding can strengthen the bond between mother and baby because it create special moment where mother and baby can known each other further.
Of course some mother having difficulties breastfeed their baby. From chit-chat with mothers from various backgrounds, I found out that some reasons why a baby doesn’t receive proper breastmilk (min. 6 month for exclusive breastfeed and continue until the baby is 2 years old) is because baby refuse to breastfeed or mum is a working mother so its hard to give exclusive breastfeeding.
In order to solve some of the problems, new tehcniques were being developed in early initiation to breastfeed like baby-crawl. Government and other institution are campaigning to encourage breastfeeding. Rules were applied to milk producers to not promote against breastfeed. Talkshows, serial discussion are conducted everywhere. Endorsers such as movie stars and selebrity are shown as icon. They talk about the importance of breastfeeding for the baby, the mother and the nations. But of course, that only solve several problems and not the rest.
If the government are commited to encourage exclusive breastfeed for the first 6 month after the baby’s born, they should also develop rules in securing the mother availability in giving breastfeed. For example, a working mother usually having difficulties giving exclusive breastfeed because she only gets 3 months for maternity leave. Plus, sometimes female employees are force to leave their job because of the same problems.
The government should make rules that force the companies to extend maternity leave from 3 month only into 6-9 months. This should applied by all companies and organization, private or state-owned, with no ecxeption. And they should also obligue to welcome the employees back to their place after the leaving period is done.
If this thing can be real, now that’s what I called a fulfill commitment in reaching peoples welfare by creating gender equality and appreciating women properly. Because to me, appreciating women means embracing the future.
