It is inevitable to say that today’s life is almost completely influenced by western culture.
This morning, I woke up and the first thing I do is listening to playlist from Deezer (since I cannot sign up to Spotify). Wind of Change and Zombie is the first two track. Follows with Blink 182 (so Junior high-school!).
So I woke up listening to this foreign singing rather than to tembang Jawa or macapat. I never fully embrace the Javanese part of me though people say that at one look, they can already tell that I am a Javanese. Yeah, I have that brown skin, short nose, dark eyes and rather oval-square shape face. Ever since a little girl, I never wanted to be seen as a Javanese. The way I see it, women in Javanese are considered second-class citizen. Their role is limited to dapur-sumur-kasur (literally means: kitchen-the well (or the dwelling)-bed). I do not want that for my future, for certain. But, actually Javanese culture has many aspects and dimension as in many other cultures. Some of the aspects that I regret not to explore further due to my misunderstanding is the arts and wisdom. Javanese culture focus strongly on harmony living between human and nature. It’s poetry and song are magical and enchanting.
I would probably, slowly, will try to learn more about my cultural root. Think I’ll start by listening this Macapat I found in youtube.
If you happen to watch it, do let me know what you think.
